DVDs for November 27, 2012

Unless every movie that comes out between now and New Year’s is a masterpiece, Paranorman will almost certainly make my list of top five best movies of the year. That’s how much I liked it. It’s a cool looking stop-motion film about a little boy who has to use his talent of talking to the dead to save a town that doesn’t even want him in it. It manages to find a unique angle on the talking to the dead thing and it’s really got a lot of heart. Rent it unless you’re under seven or easily frightened. Click here for more.

The Apparition

Plenty of terrible horror movies came out this year, but I remember this one well for making an awful mess out of a great idea. You may notice that the box art says something to the effect of: “you believe, you die” but this is untrue. This movie is just another stupid haunted house movie where a mysterious presence taunts a girl in her underwear who’s never even heard of such a thing before and wouldn’t have believed it if she had. Bad writing, bad acting, bad everything. Steer clear. Click here if you want to see me rip it apart.

Men in Black 3

The first two Men in Black movies, which followed a team of suited agents tasked with keeping the planet’s alien population on the down low, generated quite a following, but this one came out and was almost immediately forgotten, probably because they waited ten years to make it. It features J (Will Smith) traveling back in time to save the younger version of his partner K (Tommy Lee Jones as played by Josh Brolin). If you’re one of the three nostalgic Men in Black die hard fans out there, here’s your ideal Christmas present.

I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who would love to hear a story about moonshine making redneck badasses gunning down cooked cops because they weren’t legally allowed to sell their liquor anymore, but I am not one of them. The fact that this movie has no characters who are decent people and stars Shia LaBeouf also doesn’t help its chances with me. He’s one of my least favorite actors. So if you’re into Shia LaDouche, Westerns, or Prohibition era gangster stories, this is the movie you want to rent. If you aren’t go rent Paranorman. It’s much better.

Buy Lawless on DVD or on Blu-Ray.
